I have been struggling with a retreat of a root canal. What
you say? Let’s just say that I had a new long-term relationship with my
endodontic dentist who finally declared the tooth terminal. He passed me to an
Oral surgeon for an extraction of the offending tooth. Subsequently I have not
been able to chew well for a couple of
months. Thus soup making.
I made more than 10 different soups that are soft to eat. No
stews or chunky soups. Slurping up was progress for my mouth. Now I have gone
back and remade the best soups and refined them. My husband has been onboard
with this dinner theme making a few recipes to add to our collection.
So first I start with homemade broth from organic chicken
necks and backs. I found organic turkey wings were cheaper than necks and backs
and they give more meat, which has been all right as my gums heal.
It is always great to have a freezer full of broth for rice,
stir fries, and of course soup. I freeze in big containers to small 4 ounce
cups. I strain the broth and add water to each container because straight broth
is pretty rich.
Here are my top soups to date:
- Tom Ka Gai: Thai coconut soup with rice noodles, mushrooms, hot peppers, spinach and leeks.
- Carrot Ginger: Coconut milk, leeks, hot peppers, and peanut butter.
- Cauliflower Soup: No cream just the creaminess of the cauliflower.
- Wonton Soup: I bought the wonton wrappers and filled with a pork mixture. The soup has mushrooms, spinach, green onions and hot peppers.
- Hot and Sour Soup: I skipped the tofu and added rice.
- Matzoh Ball Soup: I use the mix for the balls.
- Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup: It is baked.
- Chicken Noodle Soup: With not much chicken.
- Chili: I used ground beef crumbled small.
- Split Pea with Rosemary: A bit of tomato paste so it isn’t green.
Have you ever adapted to a restricted diet because of some
issue? How did you cope? Interested in any of these recipes, just email me.

I have all my teeth and I'd still love these!
Thanks Carol. They could double for illness and of course just yumminess.
These sound delicious. I'm a big fan of butternut squash soup, which is a smooth soup too. Hope you're eating things you can chew soon!
You've missed a couple of my favourites - have you tried red lentil & bell pepper or green lentil & mushroom? Or I've got a great Jamie Oliver recipe with chorizo, chickpeas, spinach & tomatoes. I admit I like creamy soups and chowders too, but each to their own on that!
I love soup and I make it all the time, most often in the Fall and Winter. It is so healthy and filling and a great way to get extra vegetables! I make a great black bean soup (too lumpy for you right now) Your recipes all sound wonderful!
Thanks Connie. Butternut squash is a good one too!
Thanks Hannah. I think there was a lentil soup in the mix but I will look for red lentils, it sounds good. The Jamie Oliver recipe does sound good now that I can chew again!
Thanks Suzanne. A friend brought me some black beans that were yummy. I agree if it wasn't my dental necessity, I prefer soups in cooler weather.
Mmmm, these all sound delish. I love soup and have it almost every day in the winter. But more importantly, I hope your poor mouth feels better soon!
Because of my medical issues last July I found out that I needed to have my teeth pulled and go with dentures. Stupid me decided to do it all at once, so I had 28 teeth pulled in one day! I have been eating soup for so long until just recently. My favorite was a cheesy, bacony potato soup but some of these sound wonderful.
Helene thanks, I am on the mend!
Rena, I can't imagine! I was all bent out of shape from 2 root canals and only one extraction. Cheesy bacon potato soup sounds great.
These sound really good, especially the cauliflower soup! Hope you are healing quickly!
Thanks Lynne. I am on to chewing!
