Summer and warmer if not hot,
humid temperatures are around the corner. How are you going to survive this
summer?
Here are a dozen tips:
- Get a pedicure today and wear open toe shoes until the temperature dips below 60° or Christmas.
- Wear loose necklines and sleeveless tops. Hate your upper arms and can’t get over it? Layer with a thin layer or wear a short sleeve top.
- Try a big beautiful hat. Think Kentucky Derby grandeur because then it becomes a fashion focal point, and keeps you a bit cooler.
- Wear underwear. I know the thought of putting on a bra and panties when you are so damn hot can sometimes seem like cruel punishment but decorum must be maintained!
- Do not take off too many layers. Yes you are too old to just wear a sports bra.
- I know I will get some back talk but No you cannot wear short shorts. I know they are cute cut-offs but you are menopausal not prepubescent.
- No Spanx or tight fitting pants if you can help it.
- Don’t sit outside unless there is a cool breeze and you are in the shade.
- Discretely place a few ice cubes down your bra if you are eating with friends, family or at a meeting.
- Invest in waterproof make-up for the summer. That includes eye shadow, eyebrow pencil, eyeliner and lipstick.
- Is a short haircut, especially at your nape in your future?
- Reduce your alcohol intake. Don’t call me that name! Alcohol often triggers a hot flash. It also compromises some good judgment choices like taking off one too many layer or jumping into a fountain. Just saying…

Very wise tips. I've been contemplating that short haircut.
Thanks Doreen. Enjoy that coolness on the back of your neck!
The thought of short shorts is tempting ... but no, I won't go there! Thanks for the great tips.
Good judgement Helene. Sometimes in the heat of summer and amidst hot flashes, good judgement is on vacation!
Thankfully, I don't suffer from the 'pause but friends do and I sent them this link.
I love this piece and your advice! Wetting and freezing a small scarf -- one that will not show under your hat -- and lining the inside brim of your hat with it works great too.
Thanks Carol, and lucky you!
Good tips Ruth, thanks.
I actually took a piece of my sleepwear fabric, it is UPF 50, and cut it to drape down from a baseball cap held by pins and wet. Very cool on the neck while working in the garden. My husband likes it too as it protects his neck from the sun.
Great tips! Laughing at the ice cubes down the shirt and am trying to figure out how to do that gracefully!!
Lois it takes a bit of distraction to do it gracefully!! I admit I have done it at a meeting. A second benefit is the ice perked me up during a rather boring presentation!
And drink LOTS of water!
Yup, water is always good especially with ice cubes for using tip #9!
I live where it gets to 110 in the summer. My solution is to leave!
Yikes Kim, I'd be right behind you to a cooler local!
Great tips! I'm just starting to go through menopause. I have taken 3 showers today because I'm sweating so bad.
Welcome Rena to the sisterhood of sweat!
Excellent tips! Are you sure about the 'not jumping in the fountain' one?
Diane, I only give cautions, but cautions can be thrown to the wind if there are no legal ramifications!
Great tips, Haralee. I like the one about ice in the bra. THAT sounds like a perfect remedy to me. My only tip is to wear ponytails rather than the hair down. I've been considering a short-short cut but can't yet bring myself to do it... despite always have my hair up of late anyway. Oh well.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Lisa, The hair in a ponytail, off the neck, is always a good idea!
