Expressions that drive me Crazy!

I’m looking at New Year’s Resolutions while trying to bring down my annoyance meter. I have actually found myself doing a teenage eye roll with some of the expressions that drive me crazy. My New Years’ resolution is to not cringe when I hear one of my pet peeve expressions. Maybe I am not alone? Here they are:

“At the end of the day”
I dislike this much more than “When all is said and done”
Are we all incapable to summarize? Does the expression try to give more importance of what is being said?

“It’s a small world”
No it is not! I rarely bump into people I know Ever! If the world is so small I would be tripping over old school mates and relatives!

“6 of 1, half a dozen of another”
I don’t even really understand what this means and why I would ever want to use it?

“Better late than Never”
Most people use this when they are late with a birthday card, or arriving late to an event or? I’m not really sure if the sentiment is correct.  I remembered your birthday a month later? Does that make up for the late card?

“Love Ya”
What happened to just ‘Good-Bye’, or ‘See you later’?
Often I don’t love the people who are expressing this expression. Do they really love me?

“Epic”
I know this is not an expression but the popularity of the use of the word is driving me crazy. So I am adding it to my list. Parting of the Red Sea that was ‘Epic’. Spending 8 hours at bars is not ‘Epic’ it is getting drunk!

I am learning not to roll my eyes with my “epic” objections because “At the end of the day”,  “It is a small World” and what does it matter, “6 of 1, half a dozen of another’ while “better late than never” to realize I must be tolerant! “Love Ya’!

What about you? What expressions drive you crazy?

So funny! “6 of 1, half a dozen of another” almost made me fall out of my chair laughing :>)

Ahh the clichés in life that I'm sure we are all guilty of using in one form or another. Commonly used when we don't want to take the time or responsibility to use our brains to explain the scenerio as it really is such as, I'm sorry I missed your birthday. :)

Thanks Ellen. I really don't get that one but people use it quite a bit!

Grace you are so right! I think the use of cliches is worse when people are multitasking!
You are so much better than 'Better Late Than Never' with my birthday next month!

My new pet peeve expression is... "so how's that working for ya?" (a la Dr. Phil) Irks the heck out of me!

I also hate the expression "at the end of the day". And I find that people that use that expression use it often. The others you mentioned don't bother me much, although I don't use any of them myself.

Dr Phil irks me and especially his catch phrase!

Carol, you show great patience!

I know Jennifer. Once or twice, but often? I notice folks sometime lead up to it with "actually" at the end of the day!!

Laughed at "it's a small world." I live in the "small town" of St. Louis. It's a city but I ran into someone I knew today from the library world at the botanical garden -- very much a small town experience and that's not uncommon. It's one of the reasons I love St. Louis.

But I didn't run into anyone I knew in Ireland when we went in June, so maybe it's not such a small world.

I've always hated "better late than never." But I use 6 of 1, half dozen of another fairly frequently (sorry).

Joy thanks for your comments. Some people just have the luck to run into people all the time. I am a little bitter because I am not one of those people hence my resentment on the expression!

These are good ones! I'll think of you when I hear "Epic" now to explain anything less than a biblical feat or plague :-)

One of mine that I've noticed lately is, "That being said."

I don't know why it bothers me. Just overuse (plus the "being" is superfluous).

I hadn't thought of the "being" before but you are right! Now that I put 'Epic' in your head, it will show up everywhere!
