The Colors in Our Lives

Add to Technorati Favorites

I call this blog ‘Entrepreneurial Menopause Freedom’ for a reason. Not in my wildest dreams, 6 years ago when given a breast cancer diagnosis did I think it would lead to the freedom of running my own business. When treatments threw me into menopause, I never thought I would be using that experience to run a business that helps women stay cool, look great and get a better night sleep. In classic entrepreneurial freedom style, I went last week-end to New York City with my sister. I wanted to look at fabrics, at colors, at what people were wearing and what was being sold from high end couture lines to the guys selling from the sheet on the streets.

As the designer of my collection, I want my line to be fashionable with styles and colors. Fashion week and fashion shows, are all great, but for me, the most important factor is what women are wearing everyday. What styles, what colors, what fabrics are the things I look for on the streets of NYC. I won’t lie and say it is all work, it is very fun!

My sister is an artist so going to museums with her is like having your own personal audio guide. The Museum of Modern Art was having a great exhibit on Color. www.moma.org.
I especially liked looking at the color charts of Gerhard Richter and the optical fun of Frank Stella. The colors got my sister to propose to me the question, “Do we wear the colors we like or the colors that look good on us?” Did I mention how smart my sister is?

Blue eyed women tend to wear Blue clothing because they have been told often that blue makes their eyes look even bluer. What if they really don’t like blue? Red haired women have been told not to wear red. What if Red is their favorite color?
What about Black and White? I saw lots of couture and off the rack nightgowns in white. Is white a common favorite color? Does white look that good on so many women?

Colors can make us feel happy, sexy, anonymous, serious, or bland. What do you think?

Hi, I saw your comment over at Menopause Moments. (I'm the witless wonder with the wireless computer.)

I am freckled and red-haired (auburn) and never wore red. However, our Sweet Adelines chorus has nice red outfits for Christmas, and I always get lots of compliments, so go figure.

Olive drab is a good color for me, however. And others surely can't wear it.

Thank you for your comment on my blog regarding breast exams, etc.
My Mom had breast cancer (she's doing fine) so believe me, I am vigilant about exams. I have "irregularities" and go to Mayo Clinic every 6 months for exams. That's why I resisted the hormones for so long----I am on a very low dose birth control pill until things smooth out a bit.

I like colors best hanging on my wall. I'm fond of brightly colored folk art. Royal blue clothing makes me happy, but mostly I wear black (and like it)!
