In this Spring's Issue of "Women and Cancer", www.womenandcancermag.com, there is a story titled, 'Here comes the Bride', about Brides against Breast Cancer, www.makingmemories.org.
My husband and I have volunteered for this event here in Portland, Oregon for the last 3 years. It is a very, very fun event to be a volunteer. It is also a great cause, funding a last memory for women with terminal breast cancer. As another bonus it is an aerobic work-out. Since some of the gowns weigh up to 10 pounds, carrying 3-4 gowns at a time overhead gets the heart pumping.
I usually work the dressing room and my husband works the put back racks. The Brides are excited because through donations they are getting a new gown or one only worn once for a fraction of the retail price, and helping a good cause. For many of the women this is a cause close to their hearts, themselves, a Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, Friend, Teacher or Neighbor touched by breast cancer.
I am proud to say my niece Hannah donated her gown, veil, petticoat and bustier to this great cause after her wedding. Her donation was no simple task. The wedding was in Oxford England, and the newlyweds were going on their honeymoon right after event, so that left we family members heading stateside to do some creative packing. Once home,we reconciled all the pieces and made the donation.
This event is a great good feeling volunteer opportunity. I recommend finding the event in your town and give up a few hours of your time for this cause. You will have a ball.
