Are you afraid of bees?
Are you uneasy around bees? Do you hate bees? I have discovered many people have an
unfriendly relationship with bees. While putting some Chicken Codon Bleu on the
grill my friend and her husband swatted and killed and exclaimed to each other
“smash their guts”, while the rest of us looked on in horror!
I am not afraid of bees. I don’t really bother them and they
seem to reciprocate the favor. That is not to say I am going to walk into a hive
or nest intentionally. I also don’t walk barefoot around my yard just in case
the bees are there and look at my foot akin to Godzilla.
We have lavender that borders our patio. It is beautiful and
the bees love it. We have a large patch of catnip in the garden that the bees
seem to enjoy when it flowers as much as the cats. With this much bee
attraction sitting out side my yard can be challenging to those who are bee
adverse. To Bee or not To Bee?
My brother-in-law used to ride a motorcycle often. He said
it was very common to have bees hit your mouth, face and nose. His attitude was
to become one with the bees and the results would be no bee stings and less
ingested or inhaled bees on your ride. It seemed to work for him.
I have mentioned to some friends this Zen like attitude with
not always very positive reactions. My conclusion is some people are just flat
out scared of bees. They don’t like to be near bees. They are more than uneasy,
they go into fight or flight mode!
Recently I invited some friends over for dinner and they
asked if we would be eating outside. This is Oregon and when it is sunny we are
outside. We have very few bugs or mosquitos so it is very pleasant to sit out
doors during the months it is not raining. I asked if that was a problem and
their answer was coming to my house to them was like walking into a bees’ nest.
We met for Dim Sum.

I like bees. I get absurd amounts of satisfaction from growing Michaelmas daisies because they bloom in September and are swarmed with bees. The honey from the fall-blooming flowers are what bee keepers leave in the hive for them to live on through the winter, so I feel like I'm providing a vital food source.
Bees are of incalculable benefit to the environment, without them we would have no plants or flowers. Most bees, especially the ones in Oregon, are benign and very live and let live little pollinators.
I'm not afraid of bees, but avoid walking into them after my dog was stung on the eyelid last summer when he barged into a lavender bush trying to greet a friend. I do know people who have to carry epi-pens due to severe bee venom allergies.
Nice topic for a summer day.
Been bitten twice. It felt like my limb was going to fall off. I had to go to the ER. So, yes, I am VERY afraid of bees.
Some people with MS, like me, swear that bee venom helps them. I think it's a scam, like a placebo. But to each their own!
Use to have a neighbor who kept a few hives; they never bothered us, and a share of the fresh honey, YUM.
I do remember as a child visiting my sister in Alaska one summer, and bees REALLY liked my feet. Wherever we went, one would find me and crawl in between my sandal and my instep. This was somewhat problematic, though I was never stung until I was in my 30's.
Hornets I'm not so fond of, but love bees.
Thanks Joy for commenting. I will have to look up that type of daisies!
Thanks Dianne for commenting. I do feel for people who are allergic. Summer for them must be a dreaded time.
Cathy, thanks for commenting. Yikes no bees for you, for sure! My husband had 2 spider bites last year and swelled up badly!
Thanks Beverly for commenting. You are right, hornets are another story all together!
"become one with the bees"
I like this sentiment and can abide by it with many creatures, bees being among them.
But not wasps or mosquitos. I have a physical revulsion to them that makes me crazy.
Thanks for commenting Lori. I agree with you. Mosquitoes 100% do not like to be around.
