Freedom from the Grips of the Back of My Closet

I plowed through my closet with purpose and resolution. Anything from the first Clinton administration went into the charity bag! Anything with stains was cut up for rags or put into the garbage! Anything in a size 6 or under was pulled out regardless the condition and put into the giveaway bag. Sentimentality was overruled by practicality! I feel lighter and freer!

I work from my hone. I really enjoy it but my wardrobe is really suffering. I have not had to add many items to my wardrobe because I don’t go many places and do not wear out my clothes. I can wear the same ‘Nice’ outfits when needed because I am not seeing the same people. The end results:  boring clothes.

I remember when I worked for Fortune 100 companies and had to always wear professional attire. I updated my wardrobe every season with a few pieces so I was always stylish. I traveled a lot and I ruined lots of clothes with coffee stains, pulled threads and just wear. Casual clothes were more of a challenge because I spent most of my clothing budget on work clothes.

Now my closet is full of basic solid color sweaters, tops and black pants.  Not exciting or very hip and more than a wee bit boring. Nonetheless I have the following advantages:
Color schemes are easy to accessorize
Shoes are easy to match to black pants
Lots of room in my closet to buy new items
A massively impressive collection of rags

Have you purged your closet recently with success?

I try and keep my clothes organized and my closet de-cluttered. I go through it twice a year.

Doesn't it feel good to do that? I am guilty of waiting too long to get rid of items I haven't worn in years. It is definitely time to do the purge again.

I have to...it is like a disaster zone!
I have a friend who helps me b/c otherwise, I keep everything.
I think I will call her!

Thanks Helen, it does feel good. I do look at clothes from the current administration dating back as a measure to chuck.

Rachel, yes sometimes tough love from an objective source is needed! We get emotionally attached or remember how much an item cost and a voice of reason needs to intervene!

SB you are right! Cute top or new exercise shoes that will worn more often?
One of my models and friend is a great shopper and needs a current wardrobe including fancy dresses so I get my shopping high when I shop with her and it is so much cheaper for me!

I read this tip last year and tried it with some success. In January, turn all your hangers backwards. Clothes you wear will get their hangars turned around, naturally, when you put them away again. If there are still clothes hanging backwards in June, they haven't been worn in 6 months. Except for maybe one or two fall-themed items, probably all of them should leave the closet.

Joy that is an excellent tip! Thanks for sharing it.

I usually keep 'em clean, but no matter how organize you are, the clutter is inevitable sometimes :>)

Just thinking about doing this. I have an entire closet I haven't worn in years...but am so reluctant to get rid of them. Thanks for motivation!

Carol, it is tempting to watch the clothes become vintage or at least back in style again in 20+ years!

I used my secret weapon - my 17 year old daughter - to help me with my closet over Thanksgiving holidays and I have felt the same sense of liberation ever since.
