Change in Seasons, Same Hot Flashes/Night Sweats

I love fall. The brisk air, the foliage, the anticipation of Holidays….
With the change in weather is the change in wardrobe. Out come coats and sweaters, or do they?

I detected a whine in the voice of my husband the other morning when he said, “Can we turn on some heat please?” Heat? Really is it time to turn the heat on? I noticed he was wearing fleece. When did he stop wearing shorts?

Certainly when the heat is turned on and the rains have started, I need to get out my winter wardrobe. I used to have 2 sets of clothing, one for summer and one for winter. Since menopause, I notice I have one set of clothing with some sandals or a few sweaters.

One set of clothes for all seasons? I could be living in Hawaii! I don’t! Damn you menopause!!

With the change of the seasons and the heat is turned on and it is cool outside then warms up or it rains and then stops, it is hard for anyone to regulate their body temperature. For the menopausal, the hot flashes and night sweats are just having a hey day and night!

Is it hot in here? I know it isn’t just me! Do you have one all weather wardrobe?

I have two sets of clothing, yet some of one season is incorporated into the other. These days I go to sleep with warmer pj's on, but when I wake up sweating in the middle of the night I have to replace my top with a t-shirt. A nice look, eh? Of course I have a pair of Haralee pj's which I LOVE.

In summer I get hot, but since I started taking baby aspirin I get hot, then cold then hot again. Yikes! So on goes a light sweater. Then off it comes. Then on. Then off...

Yup. Like our 6 grade special movie said, "It's Wonderful Being a Girl"....:-(

My husband CONSTANTLY complains about how cold it is in the house. I don't get it..it's not cold. It's like a damn furnace.

I know Michelle what you mean. Just because I have goose bumps on my arms it is not registering to my brain!

I'm cold all day during the winter. It's weird, but nighttime is the only time I don't need to bundle up. I stopped wearing heavy jammies a few years ago.

Maybe Valerie is on to something...

It is funny Lori how our bodies regulate temperatures. No don't follow Valerie! If you are having night sweats our wicking sleepwear is the answer because it is a barrier between you and your sheets. The sweat goes from your skin to the fabric where it quickly evaporates so you are not hot then cold like happens when sleeping in cotton or sleeping on a damp sheet.

Oh how funny, I have been thinking the same thing lately as it's finally getting colder here in the east and I can finally let the house get freezing cold and allow myself to cool down from the constant hot flashes I have from Tamoxifen! I wear nothing but cotton and then layer everything as I'm constantly putting on and taking off sweaters. I sleep in next to nothing, and still wind up waking up roasting hot in the middle of the night!

Yes Tamoxifen's side effect, personal summer is not fun. I am starting to get cold feet and am excited thinking maybe I will be registering cold again??? Could it be?

Hi Haralee! I live in the desert southwest where it never gets that cold to begin with so mix that with internal heat and things get REALLY hot! Fortunately I'm better than I was a couple of years ago but I still freeze my poor husband out much of the time. :-) The good news is that I have winter clothes that I bought years and years ago and they look brand new. ~Kathy

I know Kathy what you mean about winter clothes looking brand new! Last year I wore a few mock turtleneck long sleeve tops on cold days that had to be close to 10 years old. Maybe this year I will be able to wear them again if I am in a cold snap.

That's the way to do it! Thanks Carol.
