The Water Aerobics Problem

Because of my old lady sciatic issues, I can no longer go to my exercise class. Without a class I easily become a slug. Sure I bike daily but what is my upper body doing? Right now the weather is damp and getting cold and it is not be pleasant to bike outside any longer.

It has been recommended to me to take water aerobic classes. I actually live 6 miles from an aquatic center and I have done swimming in a therapy pool also close to my home. So what is my problem?

1.     The Hair
There does not exist a bathing cap that actually keeps hair dry. I do not have wash and wear hair. I have thick, curly, wild, not easily tamed hair.  I can’t even fit my hair into some swim caps!  So this means that if I get my head wet, I have to wash my hair, dry it, put it in hot rollers and then flat iron it.

2.     The Swim Suit
Not happening. I do not have a swimsuit that I can actually exercise while wearing and continue to offer some modesty! I have a shorts and sports bra ensemble that works as well as can be hoped for.

3.     The Shaving
Even wearing my shorts, they ride up while in the water and I really have to have legs shaved all the way up! I am a brunette!

4.     The Smell of Chlorine
I cannot stand the smell of chlorine on my skin. I have to shower it off well. The time in the shower, washing the body and the hair is equal to the time spent in the pool. Add in travel time and I am out close to 3 hours!

Can you see my dilemma?  I can try not to get my hair wet but the back of the neck hair will get that chlorine smell. Who has ideas for me?  I need suggestions!

I'd say, do your best, try it once and see if it's really that bad. May not be as horrific as you think, Haralee. Speaking from experience, I can think of 37 reasons not to exercise, but then when I do, it's not so bad. :-)

Lori I just got home from the "Pool". I wish I had my own pool, indoor and heated. Buying a lottery ticket as soon as I deal with my hair!

Haha! You've certainly convinced me! Not worth the effort. :)

I am not discouraging exercise Helene, but..... !!!!!! The pool is tough for some of us to recoup and go about our day in a timely fashion.

I hate the chlorine too! And the hair thing is so bad on SO many levels. Turns my hair green too. ANd let's not even START with swim caps.

You know I'd check out the hair caps that are worn by professional swimmers. I bet they would work as those people are swimming at 4 in the morning and can't go out with wet hair in the winter.

Ditch the swim thing (until you win the lottery - you got your ticket right? ) and move to the Wii with all those great "games" that can actually be considered exercise.

I need to get mine back out again.

Still Blonde how did I know you would totally understand! Thanks

Grace thanks for your suggestion. Most swimmers have short hair. I understand why!

I have a suggestion about the hair -- find a curly hair specialist. I started going to one three years ago and it's made an amazing difference. She's twenty-something with tattoos and piercings but she really understands the modern way of dealing with curly hair and it is so much better than anything I learned when I was younger. NaturallyCurly.com has a salon finder with reviews -- it's great.

I don't know that a curly hair specialist will work enough magic to make you love the pool, but I think she'll do enough magic to make you love your hair which is also important!

Thanks for commenting on my blog! My husband looked over my shoulder while I was visiting your site and I'll be ordering "Joy" right after I leave this comment. It's kind of fated, I think.

Thanks Kit for the idea. I sure am hoping a pool is in my future lottery winnings. I did spend $2.00!

Thanks Joy for the info. We curly girls must stick together! BTW one of my BFFs was a reference librarian, now a social worker. I hope you enjoy 'Joy' and she lives up to your namesake. She really is a flattering sexy nightgown that wicks!

I love water aerobics because I hate to sweat. I agree with you about the shaving. However, nobody has more difficult hair to deal with than me. But I find if I put my hair in a ponytail and clip it to the top of my head, it barely gets wet. This has worked for me.

Haralee said...

Thanks Jennifer. Other people have told me to wrap a scarf around my head so it gets wet and not the back of my hair.
I see your difficult hair and raise you coarse thick texture!

I have crazy, curly, wild hair. I can relate. And have no solutions to offer. I'm sorry. And I swim all the time. Let me know what you come up with.

Thanks Janie. I will let your know if I find any miracles for those of us with the wild curly hair!

See, so many good reasons, I'd just skip the whole thing. But that's why I'm sadly out of shape right now!

Haralee said...

I know Carol I am presenting a case to forget the whole swim thing.Really I just do not understand why I don't live in a climate where homes come with pools that you can swim year round. I know those in southern CA and Florida will tell me pools are a pain but....

this is funny b/c my mom has the same issue with her 'water walking'

I say don't worry about the shaving or modesty - get your workout in!

Haralee said...

Good words Rachel, but were you not the gal last year this time fretting over the bikini wax??????
Tell your Mom to wear shorts and if they are longer bike to the knee all the better! My PT had to get in the water yesterday and she even wore shorts and a tank top.

I share your issues with swimming and cannot stand the chlorine smell, either. Not sure what to suggest other than treating yourself to your favorite, and somewhat nicer, bath gel and shampoos with fragrance you really like so that when you shower after you swim it will be a bit of a reward. Good luck and hope you can make swimming work for you.

Haralee said...

Thank-you Grown and Flown. Nice smelling soap is a good idea!

Well Haralee, I share a lot of the issues you mentioned. Although I waved the white flag a long time ago on the curly hair front.

Here are my two suggestions:
1. Get your hair wet before you go in. A long time swimmer told me that keeps it from absorbing the chlorinated water in the pool.

2. Try the boy short / tank two piece swimsuits. Triathletes often use them.

Thanks Nicole! I like thinking that I can wear the same suit as a triathlete!
