All Fillings Grow Up to Become Crowns

This is a tip that I want to share that my dentist told me over 30 years ago. As you age so do your teeth, your fillings in your mouth don’t last forever. All fillings will grow up to become crowns. Thinking about not taking out dental insurance? Think again!

We started seeing our dentist when she was right out of dental school, 30 years ago, and have never strayed. Her dentistry is great and her office is a happy place. So this week when I noticed I had a dull toothache, and a chipmunk cheek I called for a look see.

I was hoping that I flossed something under the gum. Hey it could happen, couldn’t it?  An x-ray showed an appointment to the Endodontic office was needed.

The tooth in question was already all grown up and wearing a crown. Much probing and digging and cha-ching, I am so happy I have dental insurance!

The verdict is still out on the tooth but I am hopeful. The reason I am trying to be hopeful is because if treatments don’t work the tooth has to be pulled. I am pretty sure the Tooth Fairy does not come to 60 year olds. Besides the absence of a Fairy visit, an implant is recommended if the tooth has to be pulled.

If you have any friends or family members who have gone down the implant journey, it is not a trip I want to take. Months and lots of money and frequent dental visits are part of the ordeal.

Not for the first time I ask again why didn’t I become a dentist or my husband? Baby boomers are all carrying in their mouth a source of revenue for dentists, endodontists, oral surgeons and their ilk.

Have you embraced your crowns, dental insurance or the implant journey?

As I read your post, I'm recovering from my tooth being pulled. Not fun and there was NO tooth fairy either!

Maybe WE are our dentists' tooth fairies!

Nancy, I feel your pain! Damn that Age Discriminating Tooth Fairy!

We had the same dentist for decades, too, but she recently moved on to teaching. It's no fun having to deal with a new dentist.

No dental insurance. I'm not sure if it's even available for self-employed individuals, but maybe I should look into that.

I know Joy, I hope my dentist doesn't retire for ages or until I don't have any teeth left!

Oh, how I hate the dentist's office! My mouth is a mess even though I've taken good care of my teeth. We aren't able to get decent dental insurance because our business is too small. I have a tooth that will need an implant in the near future - dreading the day!

Thanks Lana. Yes it is something to dread, I am with you.
We used a insurance broker who was able to get us reasonable dental insurance. It only pays 50% of big items but that is all dental insurance and still 50% with problem teeth helps!

Even with dental insurance, I have spent thousands and thousands on my teeth the past decade with crowns, root canals and yes even one implant.

My goal is to go the grave with my original teeth. Something none of my grandparents did!

I hope Kay you reach your goal! Thanks for the support.

My, what a lovely mouth you have :-)

I didn't know that adage, but it make sense. Several years that came true for me in one tooth.

Good to know when considering dental insurance, and I hope the treatments work!

You made me laugh Lori, thanks.
Like a horse, my husband should have looked at my teeth?

Hi Haralee! It sounds like you have survived the tooth fairy ordeal. I had never thought about it but you're right--our filings--especially the really big ones--do grow up to be crowns. The best news is that I regularly go down to Mexico and they have GREAT dentists down there at a fraction of what they charge here locally. While I'm doing my best to take care of what I have, I know I have a good alternative if necessary. ~Kathy

Kathy thanks for the good to know info about Mexico!

I have been spared. Thus far... My Husby has four implants now and one more in the process. He loves them!

Haralee said...

Thanks Diane, first good news about implants I have heard!

I have RA and Sjogren's and between that and all the medications I take within 2 years my teeth were ruined. I had 28 pulled in one day. Lord I thought I was dying. I had to wait 7 months w/o any at all! I didn't get implants because I have heard so many complaints so I got dentures. I wear them but I hate them.

I can't imagine Rena having all those teeth pulled in one day. I have stopped whining now.
