Breaking Bad, A Cancer Perspective

I waited a couple of days to post this blog because I did not want to be a big spoiler if some one had not seen the final episode of Breaking Bad. I am a big fan of the series. Like other fans I saw Walt change and manifest into a person almost unrecognizable in character from the first couple of episodes of the series.

What started Walt’s foray into the drug world was his cancer diagnosis and wanting to leave a financial legacy for his family. Walt, I think like many cancer patients, always thought his cancer would come back and it did. Those of us intimate with the disease know that cancer and chemotherapy can impact profoundly the body and mind.

Perhaps Walt’s was suffering from chemo brain? Perhaps his Fugue episode was real?

Who else was totally shocked by the home made chemo treatment Walt self-administered? Right there I think Walt knew his disease had progressed to terminal and he was making a Hail Mary attempt to stay alive. That scene also made creepy good television. It really showed his determination to try to fulfill his goal for leaving a financial legacy. He may have lost the $80 million but $9 million still pays the bills!

The last episode shows Walt thin and obviously approaching the final stages of his disease. What does he have to lose? He is terminal and uses his remaining strength to achieve his goal. Walt admits he liked the power and the person he became. Is trying to achieve his goal the factor that kept him going through his initial treatment and reoccurrence? I am not recommending turning into a drug dealing murderer but it certainly wasn’t a happy disposition and positive affirmations that kept Walt living!

Cancer did not kill Walt. We did not have to see Walt become bedridden and struggle with every move. We did not have to see him become disoriented. I am thrilled the writers let Walt die on his own terms and not from cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and although Walt’s cancer was not of the breast, cancer is cancer and very, very, very, very, very few cancers are curable.

What did you think of the ending of Breaking Bad? What about how Walt died?

I didn't watch the show, but I do know how awful cancer is, having watched my father spend three years battling lymphoma before he died. And I think your theory about chemo brain and Walter's bad behavior is a good one!
