My garden is a sea of bounty this year. Every plant planted
has been successful. Tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, onions, corn, carrots, cucumbers,
cabbage, lettuce, kale, potatoes and various squashes were planted. The squashes:
zucchini, acorn, butternut and spaghetti have produced a few new species.
I don’t know what they are but I did not plant them. I show
them to friends and neighbors like it is an undiscovered species found in the
wild and rarely seen. While we all laugh it up and realize it is a squash, no
one is ready to give it a try. The reason is the bounty of all known squash
varieties is too plentiful! I took a couple to the know- it -all at the nursery
who diagnosed my compost as the culprit. I would get a second opinion but I am
too busy with everything else in the garden!
For the last 2 years I have noticed a phenomenon in our
neighborhood. Usually neighbors will put out free veggies they have too many,
like zucchini or cucumbers but never tomatoes. This year I am seeing boxes and
signs, ’free,’ and even ‘pick what you like’, if the tomato plants are up
front! Tomatoes are cherished and not wormy and split ones are savored. This
year the bounty of veggies can be too much of a good thing!
I have made tomato sauce with herbs, spaghetti sauce with
meat, spaghetti sauce with peppers and herbs, tomato sauce with mushrooms, onions,
herbs and peppers and tomato paste. My freezer is almost full and the tomatoes
are still ripening.
Garden bounty in a basket is now my foray into meeting new
neighbors. If someone mentions they like tomatoes and aren’t growing any, I am
there! Cookies or muffins may be more conventional but nothing beats a fresh tomato.
I am not complaining and I enjoy the lush and bounty but I am getting a bit
overrun with tomatoes. So if you are in my neighborhood, please stop for some
tomatoes!
Has your garden produced well for you this year? Can you
identify my new squash species? Anyone want to share some recipes for 100
pounds of tomatoes?

Your tomatoes look wonderful, though I can't think of anything you probably haven't already tried, like adding them to an omelette or egg scramble.
Not a clue on the mystery squash.
Wish I lived near enough to relive you of some of the overabundance. Enjoy, as best you can.
